Bryn
Mawr Residence
Built in
the mid 1800s and located on seven acres, this stone house had
been added onto room by room over the last century. The client’s
program called for a breakfast room addition and kitchen
renovation that would respect the qualities of the original structure,
resolve a difficult circulation pattern, and take advantage of
the spectacular views.
Whenever possible, original materials, including windows and
doors, were incorporated into the new plan. Recycled materials
were used for flooring and counters. Custom millwork, used in
both the interior and exterior, employs original and/or
period-appropriate detailing.
The program also called for the reworking of what had proved
to be a treacherous exterior entry. The new porch provides a
more generous and gradual approach to the new spaces as well as
a view to the surrounding property. The detailing of a local
church of a similar time period inspired the porch column
design.
Sitting on the highest portion of the property, the new
spaces are light filled, open and warm, and the breakfast room
has direct views to a dramatic rock out-cropping.
A second phase of construction calls for a major landscaping
plan, which includes a garage/barn building and, lower terrace
with a swimming pool and dining pavilion. |
